Jambolija - (pronounced
- "yambolee-ya")
Yambolia was made in every macedonian house. It is very
thick wool rug that keeps really worm in cold Macedonian winters. Yambolias
are made in different colors, usually white and red, but it can be found
black, orange gray and in almost every color. Yambolia constitutes of
"Jatok" a tight woven base made of wool and "resi"
or hair like wool strings that are attached to the "Jatok"
also made from wool. Yambolia is made on "razboj" - wooden
weaving machine that is hand made usually by the husband. The wife was
making yambolia in heir's spare time. To make yambolia usually takes
15 days (or more) - every day's work. It was normal one house to have
4, 5 or even more Yambolias. Yambolia is usually part of the "cheiz"
- a gift given by the parents of the bride to the new married couple.
New married received yambolias along with other gifts (clothing, money,
jewelry etc.).
After the threading, yambolia is still not finished. It needs to be
colored, but some Yambolias are not colored and have the natural wool
color.
After the threading and coloring yambolia is subjected to a process
of "valanje" or "gazenje". The wool strings of the
yambolia are rough and need to be subjected to the friction bath in
water. It was usually made by special skilled man "valavnicar"
that had a special prepared pools (whirlpools) of water where this process
was taking place called - "valavnica" or "valajca".If
the family couldn't afford to pay for "valanje" of the yambolia
they could do that by a process of "gazenje" a in stone bathtub.
Yambolias are still present in many Macedonian houses, but the tradition
of making Yambolias is almost lost.

Making
of Yambolia
Yambolia
is made on "razboj" traditional Macedonian weaving machine.
Yambolia is made from 2, 3 or more parts
called "chergi" about 50 - 60 cm wide. They are weawed individualy
on a razboj, and after 2, 3, 4 or more are made
they are attached together using wool string. The basis of the Yambolia
called "jatok" is made from strong cotton
strings. This strings come in a package of 60 called "pasonca"
or "pasonce". For making one "cherga" it needs
about
6 "pasonca" which means about 360 strings, so in a average
size Yambolia with 3 "chergi" there are about 1080
strings. The strings are placed on a wooden cane called "krosno"
- placed on the back of the "razboj". The strings are
than guided thrue special parts called "nishti" and "brdilki"
- parts that are used for dividing the strings into individual
strings called "zici". The individual strings are than attached
to the second "krosno" in front of the "razboj".
The
"Nishti" are also used for dividing the 2 pairs of strings
to - upper and lower strings. The threading process is made bu
stretching a wool string using "malka" between this two
pairs of strings and than fixating it with the "brdo" or"
brdilka"
(a hairbrush like structure). The hair like strings of the Yambolia
called "resi" are than attached on this wool strings
(on every 3, 4 or 5 row).
